Making Progress.

Only Four Chapters To Go!

Tennessee Sunrise.

Tennessee Sunrise.

This evening I read through Chapters Ten and Eleven, leaving only four more before I have to assess my notes and get ready for the second read through, which will be made with those notes in mind and will set the stage for the second draft.

I hadn’t thought it when I wrote these chapters, but one of my chief complaints has been a shortage of description and exposition. There are ‘clunky’ chunks, especially in Chapter Ten, which deals, at least in part, with the thread I’m considering removing, or at least downgrading. As far as that thread goes, at the end of these two chapters, if I leave it alone I can iron out the kinks, but I’m sure it gets dealt with later on in a fashion that makes me want to just tear that thread out and throw it away in its entirety.

A couple of other things I hadn’t counted on are how the characters develop within the story. Some become more relatable and gather more depth than I’d anticipated. Additionally the focus of the story has shifted enough so that the central character isn’t so easy to identify.

There’s a lot I’d love to write about it, why I’m thinking of changing the title, why the central character is hard to pin down, the issues that the story deals with – especially in these two chapters – and the history of the world in which these characters live, but I don’t want these updates to dissolve into simple chapter-by-chapter synopses, and there would be a real risk of that. Besides, these posts weren’t intended to reveal every little detail of the book – why would anyone want to read it after reading the author’s own Cliff notes.

A Way Forward.

At any rate, I’m looking forward to getting back into the meat of writing this book, even if I still have yet another read through to go so I can have a decent plan of action – that second read through could start as early as next week, if I forgo the break I mentioned last post .

Hopefully I’ll be ready for Beta-Readers late this year, perhaps before Christmas.

Also, I’m happy that I’ve finally gotten close to my ideal goal of posting on Monday mornings. This might not be the morning, but today is at least Monday!

Perhaps give some thought to whether you’d like to be a Beta-Reader – if not for me then for another aspiring author.

Enjoy your week!
