The Second Read Through Continues…

Another Week Down.

So much seems to be going on these days that my ideas for blog posts far exceed the time available to write any, so for this week I’ll avoid any social or political commentary again and stick to the predictable – bringing you up to speed with the progress of the Second Read Through.

Read Through Update.

I didn’t quite make the kind of progress I’d hoped for, I got to the 25% mark on Friday when I got in an hour of reading that I hadn’t planned on being available.

I’m actually slightly ahead of this graphic, a few pages and two percent. Hardly worth updating my white board, but there you go.

Saturday and Sunday’s readings were curtailed by unforeseen fires needing to be taken care of. For that matter, the hour I grabbed on Friday was only available as my planned activities were upended by other unforeseen fires needing attention. It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

On the topic of ‘ill winds,’ not much good was blown anybody when my neighbor’s tree fell and took out our fence. This was today’s unforeseen fire…

Read Through Discrepancies.

At present I have 428 changes listed that I’ll need to take care of during the revision. Most of them are the kind of changes that all the advice I’ve gotten suggests not bothering with in the early stages, but no matter when I notice typos, grammatical errors or a poor choice of verb, I’m going to want to tidy it up, even if the whole chapter winds up getting rewritten on the next cycle anyway.

As an indication of the kind of notes and hints to myself, here is a smattering of discrepancies that don’t simply point out a misspelling or a missed punctuation.

210 - Mike Barker has the floor and is the ideal poster child for disgust, but this para doesn't do justice. There's a LOT of room, for SHOW here.

‘SHOW’ as in ‘show, don’t tell.’

236 - The suggestion here is too weak. Refer back to p. 36 and revisit, knowing Bessie is AS GOOD as Mrs S. Mr J should be aware of this and it needs to be acknowledged here.
418 - The class distinction is missing here. Follow on from points in 416 and drive home that [they] should accept [their] station in life as a given and grow into it as best [they] can. [They] are lower class - [they] should be the BEST lower class [they] can be.

In my original notes, this read ‘we’ as opposed to ‘they’ as in the context of the message I am identifying with the staff.

Up Next…

In the unlikely event that I can continue at my current pace, I have three more weeks before I’ll be able to report readiness to get on with the next revision. I’m looking forward to it!

In the meantime, the coming week will see me mend some fences here in Tennessee. Beyond that I still have work to do preparing for the AIP diet I’ll be starting in two weeks, then there’s going to be construction work necessary on the mini chickshaw, and time has flown by so quickly that this upcoming week is a Winter Business Intensive class week, so that’ll keep me busy on Thursday making sure I’m up to date with the homework.

All of which make me think that this week it’s unlikely I’ll make my goal of completing the next 25% of the read through.

Once this edit cycle is complete, I’ll be moving to my Gamma Reader and starting some research work for Black Box Factory. Just a couple of days ago I got this book in, The Jews of Warsaw, and it looks like it’s going to be an enlightening read.

I’m expecting to get depressed, but not all of life is uplifting or joyful.

On that note, I hope that this week proves to be uplifting and joyful for everyone, even more than I hope to be able to report being halfway through the Second Read through next Monday.

Please enjoy your week.
