Not a Carpenter.
It wouldn’t surprise anyone I know to find that my carpentry skills are somewhat… lacking?
Not that I’ll let a lack of skill put me off from trying, it’s just that a lack of skill will keep me from getting the job done in good time.
The Pantry.
We’d spent a good little time getting the Pantry ready to install the shelves you see above, and did a fairly good job of getting the walls looking pretty.
Had we known how many bails of heck I’d be bashing out of those walls only a few short days later, we might not have bothered. However, I’m sure that this was the right way to go because painting the walls after fitting the shelves would have been a nightmare.
At any rate, the shelves and supporting lumber were delivered on Monday morning, following which we made a hasty Lowe’s run to pick up the remaining hardware and tooling that we’d need, and then started work bright and early on Tuesday.
The picture to the right is as far as I could get on Thursday. Friday, Saturday and Sunday have been impeded by having a poorly youngest member of the clan and some aggravating chores and errands that needed to be done. I’m planning on getting back to it today as this post publishes (Monday).
The Old Man Progress.
Being tied up with the Pantry somewhat got in the way of my ability to get on with the start of the second edit cycle. I only had short spurts of time available to work with so I did what I could.
Scrivener.
The manuscript has been imported into Scrivener and broken into the various chapters. I’ve also started character and scene cards so I can confirm that the details remain constant throughout this edit cycle.
My first impressions of Scrivener are that it doesn’t take a lot of work to get it to run slowly. Perhaps, however, after completing the edit cycle on the Chromebook, Scrivener will seem faster.
Chromebook.
It might seem like I don’t know what I’m doing, using both Scrivener on PC and Google Docs on a Chromebook. That’s because I don’t. I’m still trying to find the process that is both most efficient and most comfortable.
I have all the chapters available on the Chromebook now, ready to be worked on wherever I happen to be, so long as I have the Chromebook with me.
The only drag is going to be porting these back into Scrivener and double checking the characters and scenes as I go to ensure everything meshes together properly.
Pinterest.
I don’t know if Pinterest is designed for this, but frankly I don’t care, it does seem to function well as a resource for character imaging. To that end, I spent a couple of hours or so at various times over the last three days putting together a Pinterest Board with pictures of people who more or less resemble the characters as I’ve imagined them. So check that out, if you like.
The thought had crossed my mind of including a page here on the blog that had images and a brief bio of each of the characters, but there’s a risk that I might inadvertently include spoilers and I don’t want to accidentally do that.
A Correction.
Following on from my earlier admission that I don’t quite know what I’m doing and that I’m really making this up as I go, I’ve been referring to my first level of test reader as my gamma reader. This is, of course, incorrect because the first level of test is alpha. So, I hope to be ready for my alpha reader as soon as this edit cycle is complete.
I’ll let you know how well my work is received.
Up Next…
Monday and Tuesday of this week, at the very least, will be swallowed up with the Pantry project, and then on Thursday I have another class learning how to be a farm business, for which I have yet to find time to do homework.
I’d expect the earliest I’ll be able to get to The Old Man is likely to be Friday, so I’ll plan on getting at least through Chapter 1 before the next blog post.
In the meantime, I hope the weather is pleasant for everyone, including me, and that we all have a productive and happy week.
Stay safe!
